Our proposal for ‘The Extension of Aguas Vivas’ is not an extension of the existing city. 2,114 house have the capacity to configure a new town. Because of this, our model is not the extension. It is closer to the morphology of a historical center.
The morphology of the historical city center has a density and population levels much higher than the newer models for extensions.
Public space is the cultural base of the model of western cities. Many of the proposals for extensions have relegated public space to a secondary role as the driving force behind city life.
The historical block is clearly delimited by continuous facades. These, in turn, arrange the streets and squares, that is, the public spaces.
The interior courtyards of the blocks, very attractive in many cases, are kept private, without any contact with public space.
We propose a mixed system, formed by public spaces, communal spaces and private spaces.
An urban morphology formed by three types of buildings: BORDER buildings, SOUK buildings and SPONGE buildings.
Each of them has a clear assignment in creating different urban spaces: the STREETS, the SQUARES and the INTERIOR COURTYARDS.
The BORDER buildings take their position in relation to the existing development and, at the same time, they border the streets, closing the block.
The SOUK buildings create a system of interior, public and communal, courtyards, generating streets or squares that cross the plots.
The SPONGE buildings function as the opposition of Souk buildings and are located in positions near the large shopping center or the anticipated facilities
